Online Training for Employees

As the revolution of technology progresses we are becoming more reliant and obligated to incorporate technology in our everyday functions. More and more businesses have added the resource of online training to their employee curriculum. The new generation of employees is more accustom to technology, so the concept of online training for employees only makes sense. Not only are the future employees more familiar with technology, but also it is becoming more common for businesses to use technology in day-to-day operations. Having technology become such a crucial aspect to business operations makes online training for future employees seem pretty standard.
Employers use online training for their potential employees to gain knowledge on mandatory topics in the work environment. Businesses who require their employees to use these online training programs aim to have a respectable and understandable work atmosphere. Online training programs include:

• Workplace Safety
• Diversity Training
• Sexual Harassment Training
• Ethics Training
• Customer Service Training…. etc.

These online training programs are beneficial in many regards. From the potential employees standpoint, online training is tremendously convenient. Employees get to learn in the comfort of their own homes and at their own pace. Having such leniency is absolutely beneficial to future employees and allows them to accommodate to their unique learning styles.
Convenience isn’t the only advantage when it comes to online training. Employers receive helpful data from online training including which potential employees completed what and how well they completed the training programs.
Overall, online training and technology have improved efficiency, economic cost, and effectiveness for businesses. As long as the dependency on technology continues to progress, online training will remain a resource for learning.

  1. At my workplace we currently have online training that we complete monthly. I work in the property management industry and we take courses regarding Fair Housing, and they continually add new courses when laws have changed. I also like the online training because it lets me learn at my pace instead of sitting in a room for hours listening to someone lecture about training topics.

  2. Online training is such a huge benefit for a company! We have several annual certifications that must be completed where I work. Each year you need to recertify in certain ethics policies, travel policies, etc. Can you imagine how expensive that would get if we had to hire someone for each of those classes every year?! The money that's saved in course instruction and testing is a huge advantage. Also, since online training has become more available and affordable, I've noticed an increase in training opportunities for general skills improvement as well. Instead of having to spend thousands of dollars to send employees to off campus training classes or hire an instructor to come onsite, employees can take those training classes at their convenience in the local office. My company also has an online learning management system where any employee can go learn about random skills they may be interested in. Online training is a huge advantage to both the company and the employee!

  3. My work also has online training videos that we must watch and then take a quiz monthly. They take it so seriously and it has to be done within a certain amount of time if you weren't there the day everyone did it. While I'm all for the safety videos our haven't been updated in so many years and sadly we have very outdated videos and some don't even pertain to what we do. I think my work would greatly benefit from creating more interesting videos because a lot of us nearly fall asleep watching them and the guy who narrates is severely monotone which doesn't help. I read an interesting article in my management class that said UPS completely changed their training program for new employees and many of it is online or using technology to accommodate for our generation because we learn so much better that way which I found to be very interesting because once they changed up the training employees were learning more efficiently and there were a lot less accidents.

  4. I love the idea of online training courses for employers to deliver their messages to its employees. One reason why I prefer online trainings is for the simple reason that I can revisit the information at a later date. This allows HR Managers more time to do more value added work. There are some trainings that I would prefer to have a face to face training. Some complicated trainings require an interaction in order to fully process the information.

    Great Article!

  5. Online training is the way of the present and the future. Before being hired at my present position, I had to participate in an online testing, than an online training for the position I was being hired for. For the last couple years, Online training and testing has been in full force in the financial industry. I see it as a thing of the present and foresee it continue into the future. Companies also use online training on continuing education in the work place.
    Good blog.

  6. I really like at how convenient online training is. I can do it at my own time and I can pause and go back to it if something comes up later. The only concern I have with the online training is the human interaction part that we miss. How can we ask a computer a question? I think it would take a longer time to get a question answered if that were the case. If HR is where I should go to if I have any problems with Workplace Safety, Sexual Harassment or Ethical Issues but I don't know what or who they look like, that's a problem.

  7. I really like the use of online training for employees because it really saves costs for businesses. However, the training will need some time and effort to design it well and to update it in the future when needed. It also may not be effective training for everything, because some things are better taught in use and in person. Most businesses though have at least some things (such as manuals or handbooks) that could easily be made as online training, and I think it is really great for that.
